Minute repeaters permit to 'hear' the time even with no light, in particular, at a time where electricity had not yet been invented. They are among the most subtle watch mechanisms; they chime every hour, quarter of an hour and minute on demand.

The Girard-Perregaux Opera II has an additional sophistication so called 'Westminster' chiming mechanism, which consists of using four different gongs, thereby providing a combination of different notes for a true melody; the play of the hammers on the gongs can be admired through openings on the dial. Combined with a Tourbillon and a perpetual calendar, this makes the Opera Three one of the most complex Girard-Perregaux watches.
